Asphalt Resurfacing in Fayetteville, NC

When a driveway has more cracks and patches than smooth asphalt but the base underneath is still solid, a resurface can give you a new surface without the cost of tearing it all out.

Resurfacing means putting a new layer of hot asphalt, usually about one and a half to two inches, over the existing driveway after it’s been repaired and prepared.

Is your driveway a candidate?

  • Lots of surface cracking, but no widespread sinking
  • Faded, rough, or raveling surface
  • Several old patches that don’t match
  • Drains reasonably well, without large areas of standing water

How it’s done

Failed spots are cut out and patched first, since a new layer over a soft base will crack again in the same places. Edges along the garage, street, and sidewalks may be milled down so the new surface meets them flush. A tack coat bonds the old and new layers, and then the new asphalt is laid and rolled.

When it needs to be replaced instead

If the driveway has sunk, holds water across large areas, or the base has washed out, resurfacing just hides the problem for a while. Replacement with a rebuilt base is the right fix then. You’ll be told which one your driveway needs.

Asphalt Resurfacing: common questions

How long does a resurfaced driveway last?

With a sound base and regular crack sealing and sealcoating, a resurfaced driveway can last many years. How long depends mostly on the condition of the base and how it’s maintained.

Do I need a permit to resurface my driveway?

Resurfacing a private driveway in place usually doesn’t need one, but work in the street right-of-way, or changing where the driveway meets a public road, can. See our licensing and permit resources page.
